Student Status and Paid Practicum Guidelines

Learn More About Our Student Status and Practicum Guidelines

Full-Time Academic Status

Willis College programs are registered and approved by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) in Ontario as Full-Time with students recognized as meeting Full-Time status requirements. In addition to our Ottawa campus, we offer campuses in Winnipeg and online programs, enabling students from across Canada to pursue exciting new career paths.

Students enrolled in Full-Time programs at Willis College, which include an off-site work practicum, must maintain official full-time status throughout their academic term to qualify for practicum opportunities. This ensures students remain fully engaged in their studies and meet all eligibility requirements for practicum placements.

To qualify for a practicum, students must successfully complete all required courses in their program. In exceptional cases, students may become eligible for a practicum after completing 90% of their program successfully.

Willis College is dedicated to supporting students in achieving their academic and career goals by providing practical, hands-on learning experiences tailored to their chosen fields of study.

Relevance to Studies

At Willis College, all practicum placements are designed to align directly with each student’s field of study, ensuring that the experience contributes meaningfully to their academic and professional development. All student practicums must be directly related to their program of study.

The Career Services team works diligently to place students in roles that support program objectives and provide relevant, practical work experience. By participating in practicums tailored to their studies, students gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed in their chosen career paths.

Authorization for Paid Internships

Willis College authorizes students in full-time programs with practicums to pursue paid internship opportunities, provided they meet the eligibility requirements outlined by the program and placement host.  Paid practicums are at the discretion of the host and their policies related to having a student on site.  The Career Services team assists students in finding placements that match their fields of study, though it is important to note that paid opportunities are not guaranteed. Students must meet the specific qualifications required by potential practicum hosts to secure paid internships.

Additionally, students receiving financial assistance, such as a student loan, are directed to consult with their Financial Aid Administrator to understand how participating in a paid practicum may affect their funding. For further assistance or detailed information regarding internships, students are encouraged to contact their program coordinator or the Career Services department.

What Our Graduates Are Saying

I chose this program because I have always wanted to work in an office setting and eventually get into the government. I would recommend anyone to Willis College any day.
