Willis College Celebrates Nurses Week: Honouring the Heart of Care

At Willis College, Nurses Week is a time to recognize the dedication, compassion, and resilience of those working in healthcare—and those preparing to join the field. Our community of Personal Support Worker (PSW) instructors and students bring purpose and passion to everything they do, and this week, we’re proud to share their stories.
A Lifelong Commitment to Care
For our faculty, nursing has always been more than a career—it’s a calling.
“Nursing is a lifelong commitment to serving others with kindness, skill, and compassion.”
With over 22 years of nursing experience and nearly a decade teaching at Willis College, one PSW instructor shared how deeply rewarding it is to mentor the next generation:
“Whether in the classroom or clinical placements, seeing students grow in confidence and skill reminds me every day why I teach.”
Why PSW?
For our students, choosing to become a Personal Support Worker often came from a deep desire to help—and to find work with real meaning.
“It’s the opportunity to deliver compassion professionally. It’s where my desire to help others meets my need to earn a living.”
Another shared:
“I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. The PSW program was the foundation I needed to start a career in healthcare—and maybe one day, become a nurse.”
Real Moments, Lasting Impact
The path to becoming a PSW is filled with small victories and powerful moments of connection. One student shared how supporting her mother through cancer, even from across the world, reinforced her purpose:
“Even from afar, our love and support can transcend borders. That experience reminded me how powerful care can be—no matter the distance.”
An instructor reflected on a moment she’ll never forget:
“A resident on palliative care took my hand and thanked me. She also thanked the PSW student working with me. That moment showed me how mentorship and care ripple outward—it was one of the proudest of my career.”
Lessons That Stay With You
Many students say the most powerful part of their program hasn’t just been learning clinical skills—but growing personally.
“I’ve learned just as much about myself as I have about healthcare.”
“The Safety and Mobility module was my favorite. It gave me real-world confidence—and I scored 99%!”
The Meaning of Nurses Week
For some, this week is a time to reflect. For others, it’s a moment to celebrate how far they’ve come.
“It’s a tribute to the compassion and dedication that healthcare professionals bring to patients’ lives every day.”
“It reminds us that what we do—big or small—matters to someone.”
The Willis College Difference
Why do students choose Willis College? Our staff said it best:
“It’s about hands-on, practical experience. Students apply their learning in real healthcare environments—and that’s where they gain confidence and purpose.”
From experienced instructors to additional certifications, the PSW program is designed to prepare students for real-world impact.
Advice Worth Sharing
“Treat every patient like your own family. That’s where real care starts.”
“Try to see the person behind the disease. That mindset has helped me connect with people deeply.”
Looking Ahead
The future is bright for these PSWs. Some hope to continue their education and become nurses. Others are focused on the power of presence—being there for those who need them most.
“I’m looking forward to more of those little moments of deep human connection that can happen between a client and their caregiver.”
“I’m eager to grow in this profession and continue learning every step of the way.”
