The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is revolutionizing oral healthcare across the country. In just one year since its launch, the program has had a profound impact by providing over 1.2 million Canadians with access to dental care and approved over 3 million individuals for support, including seniors and children who represent some of the most vulnerable populations.

This past week, Minister Mark Holland and MP for Ottawa-Vanier, Mona Fortier, joined us at Willis College to mark the CDCP’s one-year anniversary. During the event, Minister Holland announced plans to expand the program in 2025 to include all remaining Canadians aged 18-65 who currently lack access to dental care. This pivotal step advances the CDCP’s mission of improving healthcare equity and outcomes nationwide.

It was an honor for Willis College to host this significant announcement, underscoring our role as a trusted partner in advancing the CDCP’s mission. The event not only celebrated the plan’s achievements over the past year but also highlighted the vital role education and training programs like ours play in supporting its continued growth.

The Growing Demand for Skilled Dental Professionals

As the CDCP expands, the demand for skilled dental professionals is growing. Dental offices across Canada need well-trained assistants to help ensure more Canadians can access the care they need. This demand is especially pressing in rural and underserved communities, where workforce shortages can limit access to essential oral healthcare services.

Willis College’s Unique Approach: The Dental Assistant Distance (DAD) Program

At Willis College, we are proud to support the success of the CDCP through our innovative Dental Assistant (Distance) Level I & II (DAD) program. Designed to address the growing need for skilled dental assistants, this program equips students with practical skills while enabling them to train and work in their local communities.

Here’s what makes the DAD Program unique:

  • Hybrid Learning: Students complete the theoretical portion of their training online, making education accessible even in remote areas.
  • Hands-On Practicums: Students gain real-world experience in dental offices near home by completing their practicums locally.
  • Free Peer Tutoring: To ensure student success, Willis College offers free peer tutoring to provide added support throughout the program.
  • Addressing Workforce Needs: This approach benefits both students and dental offices by growing local talent equipped to step into their roles immediately.

Supporting Communities Nationwide

The DAD Program has a tangible, meaningful impact on communities across Canada. By enabling students to train and work locally, Willis College addresses workforce gaps, particularly in rural and remote regions where qualified dental assistants are often scarce.

Graduates frequently share how the program has enabled them to build fulfilling careers while enhancing access to care in their hometowns. For dental offices, hiring students or graduates from the DAD Program offers immediate workforce benefits. With students gaining practical experience early in their training, clinics benefit from additional hands-on support while shaping future talent.

A Shared Mission: Shaping the Future of Oral Healthcare

The CDCP’s mission aligns closely with Willis College’s commitment to empowering communities through education. By training skilled dental professionals, we contribute to a healthcare system centered on prevention, equity, and improved accessibility for all Canadians.

The DAD Program exemplifies this commitment by equipping students with the tools they need to make a meaningful impact while supporting the goals of the CDCP. Together, we are shaping the future of oral healthcare in Canada, ensuring more Canadians can access the care they deserve.

What Our Graduates Are Saying

The Admissions process was actually something that went really smoothly. The staff answered my questions exactly how I wanted. The next day, I told them I’m joining the program.
