**Hello Time Traveller! This Blog Post is from 2021. Please be advised that as of November 2021 the Government of Ontario is no longer offering free tuition for the PSW program.  For more information on our paid PSW program please click here.**

It’s time to go back to school and complete your Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate for FREE!

Yup, you heard that right, for free!

The Willis College Scholarship Program is currently enrolling 300 students into the program to complete a free education to become a Personal Support Worker. What’s the catch? NO CATCH! This program is designed to help fill the desperate need for Personal Support Workers in Ontario through Willis College’s National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) certified curriculum.

While all students will need to meet the qualifications for the program and will require access to a computer and transportation, books and tuition will be paid for.

The program

Our Personal Support Worker Program will get graduates job-ready in just 30 weeks! This is how your days will look once you’re registered and the program begins:

  • Online learning four days a week from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm (20 hours per week).
  • One day a week of practical experience in a designated long-term care  facility (up to 8 hours per week).
  • Some occasional in-class learning (i.e. First Aid and CPR workshop).
  • An eight week full-time learning placement at the long-term care facility (40 hours per week).

The lecture style learning will give you the skills you need to succeed, but there’s a lot more to the program than that! You’ll gain hands-on skills and make industry contacts that will be invaluable to you as you start your career. It always helps to know someone in the industry and you’ll have a ton of resources and personal connections to rely on.

“Willis College gave me the tools and skills necessary to make my transition to P.S.W a very successful one. Very professional teachers and enrollment staff. Thank you Willis College.”  – Pat Donahue, Personal Support Worker

The job

A Personal Support Worker is an essential position in any long-term care facility. They may also work in clients homes, or as an employee of a home-care agency. PSWs care for people who are ill, elderly or need help with daily tasks. They make sure that clients are comfortable, safe and enjoy emotional and physical well-being.

Some daily tasks performed by Personal Support Workers may include:

  • Providing care for people and families during periods of illness or recovery.
  • Provide bedside and personal care to clients to help them perform daily tasks.
  • Plan and prepare meals.
  • Change non-sterile dressings and give oral medications as instructed by your home care agency or supervisor.
  • Help with light housekeeping – (laundry, wash dishes, make beds, etc.)
  • Spend time talking with your clients and providing emotional support.

It takes a special person to be a PSW. If you’re a caring and compassionate person who likes to take care of others this may be the perfect opportunity for you! Organizational and communication skills are also considered an asset.
